A domed sea cave cut by Atlantic swell into the Algarve cliffs: two arches at water level, a beach of sand inside, and a round hole in the roof that drops a column of sunlight onto it. Since 13 August 2024 nobody may set foot on that sand, swimming to the cave is banned, and kayaks and paddleboards may only go in with a guide. What is left is a short look from the water - about two minutes from a motorboat, up to eight for a guided kayak or SUP group. The rules still stand in September 2026, and a large part of the English-language internet has not caught up.

In high season the popular slots - early morning and the midday light window - sell out regularly. The bigger risk is not availability but weather: cancellations because of swell are routine, and every serious operator refunds in full when it calls one.
Boat, kayak and SUP tours to Benagil Cave
Nobody sells admission to the cave, so every offer here is a tour. Booking direct at the beach is usually cheapest - Taruga charges EUR 20 (about $22.92) for the 30-minute trip from Praia de Benagil - but a reseller earns its keep in two ways here. It shows the departure point and the duration side by side, which is what decides how much of your morning goes on the crossing from Albufeira or Lagos, and it normally allows free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, which matters on a coast where trips are called off for swell. Check the description for whether the boat actually enters the cave: large boats and catamarans stay outside, and a guided kayak or SUP tour buys you eight minutes inside instead of two.

Opening hours and best time
There are no opening hours. Tours run in daylight only - navigation between sunset and sunrise is banned - and only when the sea and the weather allow it. Entering the caves is forbidden when visibility drops below 1,000 m, and the harbour master can close the area outright by navigational warning. Kayak and SUP tours are the first to be cancelled when a swell comes in; in winter, Atlantic groundswell wipes out whole weeks.
When it is quietest
Light: around the middle of the day the sun stands steep enough to drop through the roof opening and paint the famous column on the sand. That is also the busiest hour by a distance, with up to five motorboats allowed inside at once and the rest queueing outside. Quiet: the first departures of the morning generally find the flattest water and the fewest boats, and around 18:00 it empties out again with softer light. Season: May to September brings the calmest sea and the fewest cancellations, while May, June, late September and October are markedly emptier than July and August. Winter loses many days to Atlantic groundswell. Tide: operators and visitor reports agree it makes little difference to getting in - at low water the sand inside is wider, at high water the sea reaches almost to the back wall.
Who it suits
With children
Boat trips are easy with children - Taruga carries babies under 24 months free, and children's life jackets are compulsory and supplied. Kayaks start at age 6 with Taruga; booking sites list 4-5 in a double kayak with an adult. For toddlers the 30-minute boat trip straight off Praia de Benagil is by far the least stressful option.
Minimum age
Boat: none. Kayak: operator's choice, usually 4-6. Taruga does not take pregnant guests on the kayak tour.
Wheelchair
Difficult. At Praia de Benagil you wade through shallow water and are helped over the side of the boat on the sand. Departures from the marinas at Portimao, Albufeira and Lagos use pontoons instead - ask the operator in advance, because boarding still means a step down into a moving boat.
Pushchair
Pointless on the beach at Benagil and on a small boat. Use a carrier.
Dogs
No single documented rule - ask the operator.
Claustrophobia
Not an issue. The dome is high, open at the top and has two wide arches to the sea; you are never enclosed.
What to wear
Swimwear or quick-drying clothes, sun protection, and for kayaking water shoes and a waterproof phone pouch. A life jacket is compulsory for the whole visit - since the 2025 amendment private individuals, not just operators, can be fined €25 to €20,000 (about $29 to $22,920) for going without one. Near the rockfall zones the edital also requires a helmet to EN 1385.
Photography
Allowed. From a motorboat you get roughly two minutes on a rocking deck, so set your wide angle before you go through the arch. Guided kayak and SUP groups have up to eight minutes and a much steadier platform. The photograph everyone has seen - a person alone on the sand inside - can no longer be taken legally.
Getting there
By public transport
Poor. Benagil has no useful bus service and no railway station. Without a car, the practical answer is to take a tour from a town that does have transport: Portimao, Albufeira and Lagos all sit on the Algarve railway line from Faro and all have operators running to Benagil.
By car
Faro airport is the arrival point for almost every international visitor; Benagil is about 55 km west, roughly 45 minutes by car on the A22 and then the N125. A hire car is close to essential if you want to stay near the cave. Benagil itself is a hamlet of around 60 people and the parking above the beach is small, unsurfaced and full by mid-morning in summer. Come early, or start from a marina instead.
From the nearest city
Departure points compared. Praia de Benagil: the cave is around the corner, trips start at 30 minutes, you spend the most time at the caves and the least in transit, but you board off the sand. Carvoeiro: a few kilometres west, short run, boats, kayaks and SUP. Armacao de Pera: a short run from the east, often private and sunset trips. Portimao: a proper marina with pontoons, 90 minutes to 2 hours, a good coastal run and the widest choice, including catamarans and dolphin combinations. Albufeira: speedboats, RIBs and catamarans, 2 to 2.5 hours, a longer crossing. Lagos: furthest away and a long fast-boat ride - if you are staying in Lagos, the Ponta da Piedade grottoes on your doorstep are the better use of a morning. Vilamoura: mostly catamaran and full-day trips.
Tips for your visit
- Before you book, ask one question: does the boat go inside? Large boats and catamarans do not fit or do not bother. Small boats go in, but for two minutes and only when there is room, because no more than five motorboats may be inside at a time.
- More time inside is available only by kayak or SUP: up to eight minutes per group. The price is 90 minutes to 2.5 hours of paddling and a tour that gets cancelled the moment a swell arrives.
- Prone to seasickness? Take the short trip straight from Praia de Benagil or Carvoeiro rather than a two-hour speedboat run from Albufeira or Lagos, go in the morning, and take something beforehand. Boats often sit beam-on to the swell while they wait for a slot at the arches.
- Put the cave at the start of your trip, not the end. Weather cancellations are normal, reputable operators refund in full, and you want a spare day to use the refund on.
- For the view from above, follow the Seven Hanging Valleys clifftop path (Sete Vales Suspensos) from Praia da Marinha. The roof opening has a wooden fence around it. Respect it - the cliff edge is undercut, and people have fallen.
- Ignore anyone on the beach offering you a kayak or a paddleboard to nip over to the cave unguided. It has been explicitly banned since July 2025, and the ban covers your own kayak off the car roof just as much as a hired one - the edital is addressed to the general public and to pleasure craft, not only to tour companies.
- Keep the life jacket on even when it is hot. Since 2025 the fine for not wearing one falls on the guest personally, not just on the operator.
- For 2026, do not book a boat trip that promises a landing on a secluded beach. On 26 January 2026 the harbour master stopped issuing and renewing licences for landing passengers at beaches without land access in Lagoa and Albufeira for the whole bathing season. Swim stops from the boat are unaffected.
- Have a land-based plan B: Praia da Marinha, Praia do Carvalho (reached through a tunnel cut in the rock) and the Algar Seco formations at Carvoeiro show the same coastline on foot, for nothing, on a day when the sea is up.
What the internet gets wrong
Algarveportugaltourism.com still opens with the line that it takes less than ten minutes to swim the 200 metres from the left-hand side of Benagil beach, before conceding that it is now forbidden. It has been banned since 13 August 2024: Edital 019/2024 prohibits reaching the cave by swimming or with any flotation aid - airbed, bodyboard, buoy. The reason is not bureaucratic. The two arches are a one-way traffic system for boats with a right of way over your head, the swell that looks harmless at the beach stands up at the mouth, and the walls shed rock. The maritime authority restated the ban in July 2025 after having to rescue swimmers, and says the accidents of earlier years have not recurred since the rules took effect.
Getreadyforadventure.com, posted in May 2024 and never updated, tells readers they can head out by kayak, rowing boat or stand-up paddleboard to reach the cave on their own, and to pick an operator that lets them land on the sand inside. Both were legal when it was written and neither is now. Hire without a guide has been banned in the cave area since 13 August 2024, and since 2 July 2025 the edital bans tours and hire of non-motorised craft without a guide in as many words. Booking sites keep the confusion alive with product titles such as "Algarve: 2-hour Benagil kayak rental" and "Free kayak hire on Benagil beach"; the operators behind them have quietly complied, and benagilkayaks.com now heads its own page "Kayak rental with a guide (mandatory)".
No. Instruction 2 of the edital addresses the general public, pleasure craft and navigation in general, not just maritime-tourism companies, and instruction 4 allows non-motorised craft inside the algar only in groups of six accompanied by a guide craft. Bringing your own boat means booking onto a guided tour or looking at the cave from outside.
The figure is wrong on every English page that prints it - walkalgarve.com says upwards of €2,000, algarveportugaltourism.com says up to €2,000, and lagostransferservice.com, in an article dated 11 August 2026, invents "up to EUR 2500, if swimming alone". The edital sets the band for landing and for swimming to the cave at €2,200 to €44,000 (about $2,521 to $50,424) under Decreto-Lei 45/2002. What the €25 to €20,000 (about $29 to $22,920) band added in 2025 actually covers is going without a life jacket or helmet.
Lagostransferservice.com puts "Fines Up to €216K" in its headline and the number has spread from there. The €2,000 to €216,000 (about $2,292 to $247,536) band in the edital is the environmental one - in the text, noise - and is aimed at operators. Running a tour without a guide sits in a different band, €300 to €7,480 (about $344 to $8,572), and is drawn from the rules for maritime-tourism vessels.
Wapititravel.com, updated on 12 September 2026, tells readers that kayakers, SUPs and swimmers are no longer allowed into the cave and that paddling trips will not get close to it. Only the swimmers part is right. A guided kayak or SUP group is in fact the way to get the longest time inside - up to eight minutes against two for a motorboat - and up to 14 non-motorised craft may be in the cave at once, in groups of six behind one guide.
It is not, and it never was. Boat, kayak and SUP tours have gone in throughout 2025 and 2026. What ended is the landing on the sand and the free-for-all outside.
Benagilcave.org runs a page headed "Benagil Cave entrance fees & ticket prices in 2026", and the framing misleads even though the page itself admits there is no gate ticket. Nobody sells admission to the cave, there is no gate and no ticket office, and no operator can sell you the inside on its own. You pay a boat, kayak or SUP operator for the trip. The clifftop view of the roof opening genuinely is free.
That was the 2024 text, and it is still being copied. Since 2 July 2025 the caps are 5 motorboats and 14 kayaks or paddleboards. The time limits - two minutes and eight minutes - did not change.
Many do not. Catamarans and larger boats either do not fit through the arches or stay out because of the queue, and some itineraries only show the cave from the sea. livelikeitstheweekend.com is right to warn that some companies simply show you the outside; the point is that you have to read the itinerary rather than assume.
Wapititravel.com says the sun is best between noon and 2 pm, and for the column of light through the roof that is true. It is also the most crowded slot of the day, when five motorboats at a time are cycling through on a two-minute clock. If you want the beam, accept the crowd; if you want calm water, an unhurried look and the lowest chance of the trip being cancelled for wind, take the first departure of the morning.
They are about 150 to 200 metres apart. Praia de Benagil is the beach you park above and board from; the cave is east of it around the cliff, with its own beach inside that you may look at but not stand on. Walking the clifftop path gets you to the roof opening, not into the cave.
Getting in depends on swell, wind and visibility, not on the tide. Visibility below 1,000 m closes the caves outright.
History in brief
- The Portuguese word algar means a shaft or swallow hole. Benagil is one: the swell hollowed out a chamber from the side while the roof collapsed from above, which is why there is a near-circular opening in the ceiling.
- Benagil was a fishing village into the late twentieth century. Today its sixty or so residents live off the cave.
- August 2023: after a run of accidents and worsening congestion, national and local authorities set up a working group, Grutas de Benagil, to draft rules.
- 5 January 2024: the coast becomes part of the newly created Recife do Algarve - Pedra do Valado marine nature park.
- 8 May to 10 June 2024: public consultation on the draft navigation rules.
- 30 July 2024: the Portimao harbour master publishes Edital 019/2024. Ten working days later, on 13 August 2024, it takes effect - no landing, no swimming, guides compulsory for non-motorised craft, hard caps on numbers and time.
- 2 July 2025: Edital 009/2025 amends it. The caps rise to 5 motorboats and 14 kayaks or paddleboards inside at once (from 3 and 7), tours and hire without a guide are banned in so many words, and private individuals can now be fined for not wearing a life jacket.
- July 2025: the maritime authority publicly restates that swimming to the cave remains banned, after swimmers had to be pulled out of the water, and says the accidents of earlier years have not recurred since the rules came in.
- 26 January 2026: Edital 001/2026 stops the licensing of passenger landings at beaches with no land access in Lagoa and Albufeira for the 2026 season. It does not touch the Benagil rules, but it ends the barbecue-on-a-hidden-beach trips that were often sold alongside them.
Frequent questions
Can you still go inside Benagil Cave in 2026?
Yes, but only from the water. A licensed boat trip or a guided kayak or SUP tour may go in; a motorboat stays about two minutes, a paddling group up to eight. Stepping onto the sand inside has been banned for everyone since 13 August 2024. The rules were checked again on 20 September 2026 and the Portimao harbour master lists nothing newer than the 2025 amendment.
Can you swim to Benagil Cave?
No. Reaching the cave by swimming or with any flotation aid is banned by order of the harbour master, and the maritime authority repeated that publicly in July 2025. The reasons are the boat traffic through the two arches, the swell at the entrance and rockfall from the walls. The edital sets fines of €2,200 to €44,000 (about $2,521 to $50,424) for swimming to the cave or landing inside it.
Can you rent a kayak or paddleboard and go by yourself?
Not to the cave. Throughout the regulated area, between Praia do Vale do Lapa and Praia de Albandeira, tours and hire of kayaks and paddleboards without a guide are banned. The ratio is one guide kayak per six guest kayaks, and the guide must hold a first-aid qualification and keep radio or phone contact with shore. Listings that still say "rental" almost always mean a guided rental now.
Can I take my own kayak in?
Not without a guide. The edital is addressed to the general public, to pleasure craft and to navigation in general, not only to tour companies, and it admits non-motorised craft into the cave only in guided groups of six. With your own boat you either join a guided tour or see the cave from outside.
Boat, kayak or SUP - which is better?
A boat is comfortable, works with small children and shows you 15 to 20 caves in an hour, but gives you two minutes in Benagil itself. A guided kayak or SUP group gets up to eight minutes and comes right up to the rock, at the cost of 1.5 to 2.5 hours of paddling and a tour that is cancelled first when the sea gets up. SUP is the least stable of the three and suits people who have done it before.

Is Benagil Cave free?
The cave has no gate, no ticket office and no admission charge - but there is no way in on foot either, so in practice reaching the inside always costs the price of a tour. What is genuinely free is the view down through the roof opening from the Seven Hanging Valleys clifftop path, and the coastline on either side.
How long does a Benagil Cave tour take?
Between 30 minutes and about 2.5 hours depending on where you start. The 30-minute express trip from Praia de Benagil is the shortest; an hour from Benagil or Carvoeiro covers 15 to 20 caves; from Portimao reckon on 90 minutes to 2 hours, from Albufeira 2 to 2.5 hours, and from Lagos longer still. Guided kayak tours are usually 90 minutes to 2.5 hours.
Where is the best place to depart from?
Praia de Benagil is closest - the shortest crossing and the most time among the caves, though you board off the sand. Carvoeiro and Armacao de Pera are almost as near. Portimao is the easiest marina, with pontoons and the widest choice. From Albufeira and especially Lagos you spend a large part of the trip getting there and back.
What is the best time of day to visit Benagil Cave?
For the column of light through the roof opening, the middle of the day - which is also the busiest. For flat water, few boats and the lowest chance of a wind cancellation, the first departure of the morning; around 18:00 it quietens again and the light goes soft. If you can only pick one, the morning is the better compromise.
Is Benagil Cave worth it?
Yes, if you go with the right expectation. Since 2024 this is a short look from the water rather than an afternoon on a hidden beach, and it is more orderly and far safer for it. Treat the trip as a coastal run past 15 to 20 caves and arches with Benagil as the highlight, and it rarely disappoints; go purely for the one photograph, and you have two minutes on a rocking boat to get it.
Is it suitable for children?
The boat trips are. Some operators carry babies under two free, children's life jackets are compulsory and carried on board, and the 30-minute trip from Benagil is short enough for toddlers. Kayak tours take children from about 4 to 6 in a double kayak with an adult, depending on the operator.
Will I get seasick?
It is a real risk. This is the open Atlantic, and boats often wait beam-on to the swell for a slot at the arches. If you are sensitive, go in the morning, choose a short trip from Benagil or Carvoeiro rather than a long speedboat run, and take something for motion sickness before you board.
Can you see Benagil Cave from above?
Yes. The roof opening lies on the Seven Hanging Valleys clifftop path above Praia de Benagil and is ringed by a wooden fence. You look down into a slice of the chamber, not the whole of it - the dome and the beach only make sense from the water. The fence is there because the cliff edge is undercut.
How do I get to Benagil from Faro airport?
Around 55 km west, roughly 45 minutes by car on the A22 motorway and the N125. Public transport to Benagil itself is poor, so either hire a car or base yourself in Portimao, Albufeira or Lagos, which are on the Algarve railway line and have operators running to the cave. Parking above Benagil beach is tight and fills early in summer.
