Prague has no underground city and no connected labyrinth, whatever the tour listings say. The Old Town flooded, so from the 13th century the ground was simply raised over the houses that stood there – the rooms under the Old Town Hall are 12th-century ground floors that ended up two to eight metres below the pavement, not tunnels anyone dug. Everything else is a separate site with its own owner, its own ticket system and its own opening rules: a barrel-vaulted hall in the Vyšehrad ramparts holding six original Charles Bridge statues, two Cold War shelters, a free war grave under a church in Resslova, and a waterworks from 1906 where the tour crosses a settling tank on a raft. This page gives the 2026 prices in koruna and US dollars, says where English is spoken, and flags the one site that is shut for the rest of the year.

Old Town Hall Underground
The largest connected set of medieval halls, passages and cellars in Prague, and the one place where you can see what the Old Town actually did in the 13th century. The rooms are older than the building above them: a two-part Romanesque hall of squared stone from the 12th century, a stone cistern for rainwater, Gothic doorways, two surviving medieval prisons and a memorial to the end of the war in 1945.
Two to eight metres below the present street. A well about 8 m deep and the Prague ell of 59.7 cm cut into the stone. Of the 444,000 people who visited the Old Town Hall in 2025, some 67,000 went down.

Vyšehrad casemates and the Gorlice hall
From the Brick Gate the route runs into a passage of the Baroque fortress that Emperor Ferdinand III ordered built from 1654, and ends in Gorlice: about 290 m² under a 12-metre barrel vault, built between 1656 and 1678 as a mustering space and store. Because the air here is cool and dry all year, six original Baroque statue groups from Charles Bridge stand in the hall – the ones on the bridge are copies.
The casemate system measures 1,017 m in four sections and the visitor route is 300 m; the passages are about 1.6 m wide and 2.6 m high. The operator describes the route as wheelchair accessible. Podolí casemates (Vyšehrad)
The fortress's second underground route runs through early-modern casemates that were converted into air-raid shelters in the Second World War. What you see is the wartime fit-out, period sanitary installations and the wall inscriptions left by the so-called Vyšehrad Riders in the 1950s.

Crypt of the Church of Sts Cyril and Methodius (National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror)
Seven Czechoslovak parachutists hid in the crypt of this Orthodox church on Resslova for 21 nights after the attack on Reinhard Heydrich, and fought their last fight here on 18 June 1942. A bust and a life story now stand for each of the seven, and an exhibition in the antechamber runs from the Munich Agreement to the reprisals.
Run by the Military History Institute, not by the church. Group tours Tue–Fri 9:00–16:00 on request, also free, with a film. Material in Czech and English. The bullet holes are still visible around the ventilation window on the outside wall.

The bunker under the Hotel Jalta (Cold War Museum)
Beneath the Hotel Jalta on Wenceslas Square lies a shelter built with the hotel and intended for the military general staff. Until 1989 state security officers sat here every day listening in on Western hotel guests. The second basement has been open as the Cold War Museum since 2013, with a border-guard room, a teleprinter, surveillance equipment and a small operating theatre.
Around 10 m under Wenceslas Square, concrete walls 2 m thick, designed for 150 people for up to two months, with its own ventilation and generator. Struck off the civil-defence shelter register in 1997. Tours in Czech as standard; other languages cost extra and must be ordered in advance.

Bunker Bezovka under Parukářka (Žižkov)
Under the Hill of the Holy Cross in Parukářka park sits one of the largest civil-defence shelters in Prague, built between 1950 and 1955. After 1989 it served for a while as a music club and a climbing hall; today a volunteer society shows a Cold War collection there – gas masks, protective suits, Soviet kit and measuring gear.
Rated today for 2,500 people, up to 5,000 at closer packing. Walls 2 to 3 m thick, pressure doors of around 4 tonnes, two water tanks, a filter plant and standby generators. The shelter is still operational and stores fire-service and civil-defence equipment.

Kryt Folimanka (Vinohrady, Prague 2) – closed for the rest of 2026
The largest underground structure in the Prague 2 district, built in the 1950s and 1960s and still heated, lit and maintained. In a normal year it opens free on one Saturday a month, with no booking and no guide, and shows a permanent exhibition on the bombing of Prague in February 1945.
1,332 m², room for 1,300 people, almost entirely step-free according to the district, around 10,000 visitors a year. Main entrance on Pod Karlovem, opposite no. 2. The ArtKryt festival is announced for 9–11 October 2026.

Old sewage works, Bubeneč (Stará čistírna odpadních vod)
The treatment plant that went into service in 1906 to plans by the engineer William Heerlein Lindley still has its steam engines, boiler house and underground settling chambers. The tour walks an original sewer and crosses a subterranean settling tank on a raft, and takes in original drawings, historic photographs and a documentary film from 1943.
On the Czech tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage and counted among the most significant industrial monuments in Europe. Not wheelchair accessible, no dogs.

There is no single booking system. The Old Town Hall sells at its ground-floor desk and online through ColosseumTicket, which Prague City Tourism names as its only authorised seller; the guided circuits into the underground and the historic rooms leave at posted times and you sign up on the spot. Vyšehrad sells timed departures through portal.colosseum.eu, roughly 10 per cent cheaper online than at the window. The Hotel Jalta bunker must be booked at least five hours before the tour. Bunker Bezovka takes bookings by e-mail at bunkr-bezovka@email.cz.

These are small tours. Vyšehrad takes 30 people per departure, the Podolí casemates 20, the sewage works 30, and the Jalta bunker only 7 adults and 4 children. At weekends and through the summer the good times go days ahead.
Tours of underground Prague
Buying direct is cheapest: the Old Town Hall is 350 CZK (about $16.48) plus 100 CZK for the cellars, and Vyšehrad is 295 CZK (about $13.89) online. A reseller earns its keep when you want the underground explained in English by a guide who also walks you through the Old Town above it, when a bundle saves a second booking, or when free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead matters more than the margin. When it is quietest
Go underground on the days when Prague above ground is unbearable: July and August, when the Old Town is hot and packed, and any wet afternoon. For the Old Town Hall take the first hour after opening – the basic ticket is half price and the scrum at the Astronomical Clock has not built up yet, so 9:00 from April to December and 10:00 from January to March. The sewage works runs at weekends only and Kryt Folimanka only on its monthly Saturdays, so both have to go into the itinerary in advance rather than be fitted in. Bunker Bezovka posts only a handful of dates a year; if you want it, build the trip around the date or write and ask.
Who it suits
With children
The Old Town Hall underground – well, dungeon, low doorways – works from about school age. The sewage works has a weekend slot of its own at 15:00 built for children aged 3 to 7 with a parent or grandparent, and the raft crossing over the settling tank holds older children too. The crypt in Resslova is where seven men died; it is not a place to take small children.
Minimum age
No general minimum. Under-6s are free almost everywhere. Bunker Bezovka lists the reduced rate from age 12 and takes younger children free.
Wheelchair
Only two of these places work. The Vyšehrad route to the Gorlice hall is described by the operator as wheelchair accessible, and Kryt Folimanka is almost entirely step-free – though it is shut for the rest of 2026. The Podolí casemates, the sewage works and the historic interiors of the Old Town Hall are not accessible: a lift runs up to the tower gallery, but the way down to the cellars is stairs.
Pushchair
Fine in the casemates to Gorlice and in the Folimanka shelter, both of which are laid out on one level. For the Old Town Hall cellars and the sewage works, bring a carrier instead.
Dogs
Banned at the sewage works. Kryt Folimanka allows well-behaved pets, in the operator's own words. Elsewhere the usual museum rule applies: assistance dogs yes, others no.

What to wear
Every one of these places is noticeably cooler than the street all year, and the gap is widest in a Prague heatwave. Take a jacket or a jumper and wear proper shoes: the floor is damp and uneven in places in the casemates and at the sewage works.
Photography
None of these operators publishes a photography ban in its visitor information. In the crypt in Resslova, behave as you would at a grave – no flash, no posing.

By public transport
From Václav Havel Airport, about 17 km west of the centre, trolleybus 59 reaches Nádraží Veleslavín on metro line A in roughly 15 minutes; bus 100 runs to Zličín on line B in about 18 minutes, and bus 191 to Anděl in about 50. Night buses 907 and 910 cover 22:00 to 5:00. The Airport Express to the main railway station is a separate 200 CZK fare and is not covered by an ordinary ticket – buy your ticket before boarding, from a machine, the DPP info centre or the PID Lítačka app. Then: Old Town Hall, metro A to Staroměstská and five minutes on foot, or trams 2, 17, 18. Vyšehrad, metro C to Vyšehrad and about ten minutes' walk to the Brick Gate, or trams 2, 3, 7, 17, 21 to Výtoň and up the hill. Crypt in Resslova, metro B to Karlovo náměstí. Hotel Jalta, metro Muzeum or Můstek – the entrance is on Wenceslas Square itself. Bezovka, metro A to Flora or a tram to Olšanské náměstí, then three minutes into Parukářka park. Folimanka, metro C to I. P. Pavlova. Sewage works, trams 8, 12, 25, 26 to Goetheho.
By car
Do not bring a car into the Old Town: the whole district is paid-permit parking with almost no chance of a space. Park-and-ride sites at the outer metro termini (Nádraží Holešovice, Zličín, Opatov among them) plus the metro are the sensible route in. Vyšehrad has a few spaces by the Tábor Gate, and the sewage works has a small car park on Papírenská.
From the nearest city
Every site is inside Prague and a 24-hour PID ticket at 150 CZK (about $7.06) covers the lot; three days is 350 CZK (about $16.48). Old Town Hall to Vyšehrad is about 20 minutes by metro and tram, to Parukářka about 20, out to Bubeneč about 25. Most international arrivals come by air; trains from Berlin, Vienna, Dresden and Bratislava all reach Praha hlavní nádraží, which is two metro stops from the Old Town Hall.
Tips for your visit
- The underground is not in the Old Town Hall's basic ticket. If the cellars are all you want, add Circuit B for 100 CZK; Circuit A at 150 CZK throws in the Gothic chapel and the state rooms.
- Go in the first hour after opening and the basic ticket is half price – 9:00 from April to December, 10:00 from January to March. It is also the quietest hour at the Astronomical Clock.
- If you want the underground explained in English rather than read off a panel, Prague City Tourism sells a scheduled two-hour Medieval Underground walk in English at 600 CZK a head with admission included. The private-guide version costs 2,500 to 3,500 CZK for the group and does not include admission – check which one you are buying.
- Vyšehrad tickets are about 10 per cent cheaper online: 295 instead of 330 CZK for an adult. Worth doing anyway, because only 30 people get on each departure.
- Book the Hotel Jalta bunker at least five hours ahead, and remember a tour takes seven adults at most. Turn up on spec and you will find a locked door. Ask for your language when you book – it costs extra and cannot be arranged on the day.
- Kryt Folimanka is closed from August to the end of 2026 for building work. Check krytfolimanka.cz rather than the English listings, several of which still print a full 2026 calendar.
- Buy a 24-hour PID ticket for 150 CZK (about $7.06) or a 72-hour one for 350 CZK – it covers metro, tram, bus and the airport trolleybus, though not the Airport Express. Ticket before boarding, always.
- The crypt in Resslova costs nothing and is shut on Mondays. It is ten minutes from Karlovo náměstí and pairs naturally with the Dancing House.
- Underground is the right plan for a Prague heatwave or a wet day. It stays cool down there all year, so a jacket belongs in the day bag even in August.
What the internet gets wrong
Nobody dug any of it. The Old Town flooded, so from the 13th century the ground was raised by two to four metres and the Romanesque houses were left standing underneath – their ground floors became the cellars of the Gothic houses built on top. Archaeology on Old Town Square measures 1.5 to 3 metres of made ground, up to 5 in places. Real Prague Guides, a local operator, puts it flatly: Prague never developed interconnected tunnels or man-made labyrinths beneath its streets.
Prague has no catacombs. A catacomb is a burial gallery; these are living rooms with a rainwater cistern, two medieval prisons and Gothic doorways. The nearest real ossuary is Sedlec at Kutná Hora, an hour east by train, and the only crypt in Prague you can enter is the war grave under the Church of Sts Cyril and Methodius in Resslova – free, and run by the Military History Institute.
The operator says the shelter is closed from August to the end of 2026 for building work. The open days in 2026 were 10 January, 14 February, 14 March, 18 April, 16 May, 13 June and 18 July, and that was the lot.
The Cold War Museum has no opening hours. You book at least five hours ahead and a tour takes a maximum of seven adults and four children. The shelter is the hotel's second basement, roughly 10 metres down, with 2-metre concrete walls. Adults pay 250 CZK (about $11.77); the 75 CZK still quoted around the web comes from a 2014 article.
No operator of any site on this page publishes a temperature. What they do say is that the floor is damp and uneven and that you should bring a layer. Any figure in degrees that you read in an English guide to underground Prague is somebody's guess.
450 CZK is the skip-the-line ticket. The ordinary adult ticket is 350 CZK (about $16.48), and the underground is not in it either way – Circuit B, the cellars alone, adds 100 CZK, and Circuit A with the chapel and state rooms adds 150 CZK. In the first hour after opening the basic ticket is half price, which no reseller mentions.
The operator's casemates ticket covers the walk to Gorlice and the exhibition in the Powder Magazine. The basilica is a separate ticket. Adults pay 330 CZK at the window and 295 CZK online, about $15.54 and $13.89 – the “from 120 CZK”, the 10:00–18:00 opening and the 30-minute duration still printed on kudyznudy.cz are all wrong; the walk is guided, 45 to 60 minutes, and runs at booked times only.
The plant in Bubeneč takes individual visitors at weekends and on public holidays only, at 10:00, 11:30, 13:30 and 15:00. A tour actually conducted in English – or German – is a separate product for groups of ten or more at 300 CZK (about $14.13) a head, and the ordinary adult ticket is 280 CZK (about $13.18).
History in brief
- Prague's Old Town sits on the bank of the Vltava and flooded again and again. From the 13th century the ground was raised on purpose – by two to four metres, more in places.
- The Romanesque houses were not demolished in the process. They were left standing and buried: their ground floors ended up below street level and became the cellars of the new Gothic houses. Those are the rooms you walk through under the Old Town Hall.
- Archaeological work on Old Town Square puts the historic layers at 1.5 to 3 metres, up to 5 in places, with the looser made ground dating to the 13th and 14th centuries.
- The Old Town Hall tower was finished in 1364, but the rooms beneath it are older than the building – the earliest parts go back to the 12th century.
- In 1654 Emperor Ferdinand III ordered the Baroque fortress built at Vyšehrad. Casemates were laid into its ramparts, and between 1656 and 1678 the Gorlice hall took shape inside them – it ended up as large as it is because the builders miscalculated.
- The Hotel Jalta on Wenceslas Square was built in 1958 to designs by Antonín Tenzer. A shelter for the military general staff was put in beneath the socialist-realist showpiece, and it doubled as a listening post until 1989.
- Between 1950 and 1955 civil defence sank the Bezovka shelter under the Hill of the Holy Cross in Žižkov; Kryt Folimanka followed under Vinohrady in the 1950s and 1960s.
- In March 2026 Prague City Tourism announced that the Old Town Hall underground will be rebuilt: from 2027, over roughly two years, three new circuits with projection and video mapping are planned, among them one on the Golem and one on the Prague Uprising.
Frequent questions
Is there an underground city under Prague?
No. There is no connected system, no underground city and no tunnel you can follow from the Old Town to the Castle. Seven separate sites are open, each with a different owner: the Old Town Hall cellars belong to Prague City Tourism, the 1,017 m of Vyšehrad casemates to the national monument administration, the Bezovka and Folimanka shelters to civil defence and the Prague 2 district, the old sewage works to a company of its own. None of them connects to the next.
Why is the Old Town of Prague underground?

Can you visit Prague's underground without a tour?
Almost nowhere. The Old Town Hall cellars, the Vyšehrad casemates, the old sewage works, the Jalta bunker and Bunker Bezovka are guided only. The two exceptions are the crypt of Sts Cyril and Methodius in Resslova, which you walk into free of charge during opening hours, and Kryt Folimanka on its open days – and Folimanka is shut from August to the end of 2026.
Are the tours in English?
Yes, at the main sites. Prague City Tourism runs its commented circuits in Czech, English, Spanish, Italian and French, and sells a scheduled two-hour Medieval Underground walk in English for 600 CZK a head with admission included. Vyšehrad guides in Czech and English, with a digital guide in German, Spanish, French and Italian alongside. The Jalta bunker is Czech by default and charges extra for another language, ordered when you book. German is the awkward one: reliably available only at the old sewage works, for groups of ten or more.
How long does the Old Town Hall underground tour take?
About an hour for the circuit itself. Prague City Tourism's guided Medieval Underground walk, which adds the streets above, runs two hours. Vyšehrad's casemates walk is 45 to 60 minutes, the Podolí casemates the same, the sewage works about 70 minutes and the Jalta bunker about an hour. Folimanka you do at your own pace, usually 30 to 60 minutes.
Are the Vyšehrad casemates worth it?
If you only do one thing underground in Prague after the Old Town Hall, do this. You walk a passage of the 1650s fortress about 1.6 m wide and 2.6 m high and come out in Gorlice, a hall of roughly 290 m² under a 12-metre vault holding six original Baroque statue groups from Charles Bridge – the ones on the bridge itself are copies. Is Kryt Folimanka open in 2026?
Not any more. The shelter is closed from August to the end of 2026 for building work, which the operator states on krytfolimanka.cz. The open Saturdays this year were 10 January, 14 February, 14 March, 18 April, 16 May, 13 June and 18 July. Several English-language listings still publish a full 2026 calendar running to December – ignore them and check the operator.
How do I book the Hotel Jalta nuclear bunker?
Through the Cold War Museum, at least five hours before the tour, online or at the hotel desk. There are no opening hours to turn up within, and a tour takes seven adults and four children at most. Adults pay 250 CZK, about $11.77; students and seniors 190 CZK, children 6–15 120 CZK. If you want the tour in English rather than Czech, say so when you book – it costs extra and cannot be arranged on the day.
Can you tour Prague's sewers?
Only the disused ones. The 1906 treatment plant in Bubeneč shows its steam engines, boiler house, an original sewer you walk along and a raft crossing over an underground settling tank – weekends and public holidays, guided, at 10:00, 11:30, 13:30 and 15:00, 280 CZK for an adult, about 70 minutes, 30 people maximum. The city's working sewer network is not open to visitors.
Is there a combined ticket for underground Prague?
No. Seven operators, seven ticket systems, no joint pass that covers them all. The Old Town Hall sells through its own desk and ColosseumTicket, which Prague City Tourism names as its only authorised seller; Vyšehrad sells timed slots through portal.colosseum.eu; the Jalta bunker and Bezovka take bookings direct. Budget for three separate transactions if you want the Old Town Hall, Vyšehrad and a shelter in one day.
How do I get there from Václav Havel Airport?
Trolleybus 59 runs from the terminals to Nádraží Veleslavín on metro line A in about 15 minutes; bus 100 goes to Zličín on line B in about 18, bus 191 to Anděl in about 50, and night buses 907 and 910 cover 22:00 to 5:00. From Veleslavín, metro A runs straight to Staroměstská, five minutes' walk from the Old Town Hall. Buy your ticket before boarding – a 24-hour ticket is 150 CZK (about $7.06). The Airport Express to the main station is a separate 200 CZK fare that ordinary tickets do not cover.
Is any of it wheelchair accessible?
Two places. The operator describes the Vyšehrad route to the Gorlice hall as wheelchair accessible, and the Prague 2 district says Kryt Folimanka is almost entirely step-free – though Folimanka is shut from August to the end of 2026. The Podolí casemates, the old sewage works and the historic interiors of the Old Town Hall are not: a lift goes up to the tower gallery, but the way down to the cellars is stairs.
How many steps are there, and how cold is it?
Nobody publishes either figure. No operator gives a step count for the way into the Old Town Hall cellars, and the count for the tower itself is quoted inconsistently at 172 and 287. No operator gives an internal temperature anywhere on this page. What is documented is that everything down there is noticeably cooler than the street all year and that the floor is damp and uneven in places – so a jacket and proper shoes, and treat any “constant 10–12 °C” you read as invented.
Is underground Prague good with children?
In parts. The old sewage works has a weekend slot at 15:00 designed for children aged 3 to 7 with a parent or grandparent, and the raft crossing works for older ones too. The Old Town Hall cellars, with the well and two medieval prisons, land well from about school age. Kryt Folimanka is free and almost step-free, when it is open. The crypt in Resslova is a grave and is not a place for small children.
