When everything is sold out
The operator says some dates and times sell out faster than others. On 21 September 2026 its ticket system showed single-digit availability on several late-morning Hidden Wonders departures for the following Saturday, while weekday departures were largely open. The summer Bracken Bat Flight packages sell out every year.
Natural Bridge Caverns tickets on Tiqets
Tiqets sells the operator's own timed tickets, so you join the same guided tours as everyone else. For the two main tours it is currently the cheaper channel: on every date we compared, Tiqets charged about a quarter less than the operator's web shop – on Wednesday 30 September 2026, for example, $21.50 against $28.50 for an adult Discovery or Hidden Wonders ticket, and $14.00 against $18.50 for a child aged 3–11 – with free cancellation up to 48 hours before. The Lantern Tour is a split verdict: Tiqets charges a flat $33 per person, which is about the operator's $32.50–$38.00 adult price but well above its $21.25–$24.75 child price. Twisted Trails is dearer on Tiqets ($31.52) than on the operator's site ($29.49 online). Tiqets has no ticket for both caves, and the operator's Combo ($46.75–$57.75 per adult) is the better deal if you want both. Whichever you buy, the $10 parking charge is paid on arrival, and we could not check whether the operator's shop adds tax at checkout, so compare the final basket totals before you pay.

Opening hours and best time
Open every day except Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day (in 2026 also closed on 25 and 26 January). Times change by day and season, and the operator publishes them per date in a calendar; the times below are the cavern-tour windows, with the grounds opening half an hour before and closing about 90 minutes after. Autumn and winter 2026 (to mid-December): Monday–Friday 10am–4pm, Saturday 9am–5pm in October and 9am–4pm from November, Sunday 9am–4pm. Summer Saturdays run to 6pm, and 4 July 2026 to 7pm. Christmas Eve 9am–3:30pm; 26–31 December 9am–5:30pm. Discovery tours leave every 10 to 40 minutes, Hidden Wonders roughly every half hour on busy days and hourly on quiet weekdays. The Lantern Tour is the first tour of the day (9am at weekends, 10am on weekdays) and does not run every day. Online sales for each departure close one hour before it leaves. Twisted Trails opens at 10am and closes with the cave tours, weather permitting. Adventure Tours run by phone reservation only.
When it is quietest
A weekday outside the Texas school holidays, booked a few weeks ahead. Because the operator's price only ever rises as the date approaches, the calendar itself tells you when demand is low: in autumn 2026 the cheapest adult days were Tuesday to Thursday at $28.25–$29.25, Saturdays $31.75–$34.00. The cave is 70 °F all year, so a scorching July afternoon or a wet February morning makes no difference underground – though heavy, sustained rain can occasionally raise the Trinity Aquifer into the cave, as it did in April 2026 for the first time in ten years. Weekend mornings sell out first on Hidden Wonders. Avoid arriving late in the day: the last tours leave around 4pm on weekdays.
Who it suits
With children
Suitable for walking children; under-3s are free. The operator rates both tours as mildly strenuous: steep, wet paths with handrails, many stairs, and a climb back up of 180 feet on the Discovery Tour. It suggests a hands-free carrier for toddlers. Hidden Wonders saves the climb out with a conveyor, but riders need good balance.
Minimum age
None for the walking tours. Adventure Tours from 8 years, minors with a parent or guardian. Twisted Trails: minimum height 48 in (122 cm), or 42 in (107 cm) with a paying adult chaperone, maximum weight 300 lb (136 kg); the Tykes course is for children up to 48 in.
Wheelchair
Not accessible, and the operator says so plainly: the cavern tours are not wheelchair accessible because of stairs and tight bends. The grounds, visitor centre, gem panning, maze and butterfly gardens are. Since 4 May 2026 guests who cannot go underground get free access on arrival to a narrated Virtual Discovery Cavern Tour on their own phone or tablet.
Pushchair
Not allowed on the cavern tours (FAQ); free buggy parking is provided. The operator's tour pages say only "not recommended", and its blog says not recommended in the Discovery Cavern and not allowed in the Hidden Cavern – plan on leaving the pushchair above ground.
Dogs
Leashed pets are welcome on the grounds but only ADA service animals may go on cavern tours or into buildings. Free shaded crates are available on a first-come basis. Do not leave pets in the car.
Claustrophobia
The walking tours use paved paths through large chambers – the Discovery Cavern's rooms are the largest of any Texas show cave – so there is no crawling. Hidden Wonders includes a planned moment of total darkness. Only the Adventure Tours involve tight crawlways.
What to wear
Dress for warm and wet rather than cold: 70 °F (21 °C) at 99 per cent humidity feels like the low-to-mid 80s °F. Shorts and a T-shirt are what most visitors wear. Shoes with rubber soles and good grip matter more than anything else, because the paths are steep and wet in places; drips from the ceiling are normal. For Twisted Trails: closed shoes with a heel strap, no skirts or dresses.
Photography
Allowed, flash included, as long as you keep up with the group and do not photograph wildlife with flash; the operator warns that flash often lights up the humidity as haze. Tripods and selfie sticks are banned on cave tours and Twisted Trails; GoPros are allowed. Drones are prohibited anywhere on the property, including the car park. There is visitor Wi-Fi underground.
Getting there
By public transport
None. The operator's own FAQ states there is no public transport or shuttle to the caverns. Ride-share drivers will drop you off, but for the return trip you need to book a pickup time in advance; without one the operator warns of waits of an hour or more, and the gates close once the last tour is back.
By car
$10 per vehicle per day, paid on arrival. Space for RVs, buses and oversized vehicles in the upper part of the lot. No overnight parking.
From the nearest city
From downtown San Antonio about 27 miles (44 km), around 35–40 minutes without traffic; the operator says 30 minutes. Directions from the operator: I-35 north to exit 175, turn left (west) on Natural Bridge Caverns Road / FM 3009, eight miles on the left. From New Braunfels about 15 miles (25 km), 25 minutes; from Austin (Capitol) about 68 miles (110 km), 80 minutes; from San Antonio International Airport about 22 miles (35 km). Nearest hotels are in Schertz, about 8 miles away; there is no lodging or camping on site.
Tips for your visit
- Book as early as you can. The operator's prices only ever go up as the date approaches; on 21 September 2026 a same-day adult Discovery ticket was $34.50, the same ticket for the following Wednesday $30.75, and nine days out $28.50.
- Pick your tour by what you can manage, not by which is 'better'. The Discovery Tour has the bigger rooms but a long uphill walk out; Hidden Wonders has more delicate formations and a conveyor ride out, which needs good balance. If you can, take the Combo – it saves about $10 over two single tickets.
- Budget $10 for parking. It is charged per vehicle on arrival and is not included in any ticket, whether bought from the operator or from a reseller.
- Wear grippy shoes and light clothes. 70 °F at 99 per cent humidity feels like the 80s; a jacket just gets in the way.
- Screenshot your tickets before you set off. Mobile coverage at the park is poor, and the ticket arrives as a PDF by e-mail.
- Leave the tripod and selfie stick in the car – both are banned on tours. Flash is allowed, but in saturated air it often just lights up the haze; a phone in night mode does better.
- Without a car, book the return ride before you go in. There is no bus, and the operator warns that unscheduled ride-share pickups can take an hour or more.
- The zip rails, ropes course, maze and gem panning are not part of any cave ticket. Buy the maze online if you want it: $6.99 against $13.99 at the gate.
- Do not confuse the address with the neighbour's. Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, 26515 Natural Bridge Caverns Road, is a separate drive-through safari with its own tickets.
What the internet gets wrong
The four discoverers were students at St. Mary's University in San Antonio and members of its Speleological Society. The operator, St. Mary's University itself and the Texas State Historical Association all say so. Orion Knox went to UT Austin later – after selling his stake in the caves in 1965 – which is where the magazine's own article says he met his wife.
Hidden Passages ran from 2010 to 2023 and was replaced on 12 May 2023 by the Hidden Wonders Tour. The gem panning is now the Natural Bridge Mining Co.
The operator gives a constant 70 °F (21 °C) at 99 per cent humidity, and says it feels more like 80 °F. The mid-60s figure belongs to other Hill Country caves – Cave Without a Name is 66 °F.
the operator's FAQ says flash photography is allowed inside the caverns as long as it is not used on wildlife. What is banned is tripods and selfie sticks on tours, and drones everywhere on the property. The no-flash rule applies to the separate Bracken Bat Flight evening, not to the cave.
parking is $10 per vehicle, paid on arrival, on the operator's pricing page and in its FAQ. And in autumn 2026 online adult prices start at $28.25, not $37.
There is no flat price. Adults pay $28.25–$34.50 and children 3–11 $18.25–$22.50 online depending on the date, under-3s nothing. The route is 3/4 mile (1.2 km).
The operator's Discovery route is 3/4 mile (1.2 km). And its claim is narrower than these pages make it: the largest cavern in Texas by volume, and – on its own list of claims – only the 7th-longest cave system in the state.
The tours go to 180 feet on the Discovery side and 160 feet on Hidden Wonders; the Discovery trail alone is 3/4 mile, and the Hidden Wonders expansion of 2023 added 1,100 feet of path. The Handbook entry predates both.
The operator's own account of the 2020 lighting project gives "over 1,200 fixtures" in the Discovery Cavern. Where 2,500 comes from is not stated; the 3,366 lights and 8,704 LED bulbs the operator quotes belong to the Hidden Wonders Tour, not the Discovery Tour that Tiqets is selling.
On 21 September 2026 the operator's ticket system showed no adult Discovery or Hidden Wonders price below $28.25 on any open day through 31 December 2026.
1/4 mile (0.8 km)" for Hidden Wonders (naturalbridgecaverns.com, the tour page): a quarter mile is 0.4 km, not 0.8 km, and the operator's 2023 fact sheet for the same tour gives ½ mile. The 0.8 km figure fits the half mile; the quarter mile looks like a typo.
The operator's web shop also sells the Combo and the Lantern Tour, and the Lantern Tour actually requires an advance online reservation. Only Adventure and VIP tours are phone-only.
These are two different federal listings run together. The caverns are a National Natural Landmark (1971, National Park Service register) and, separately, on the National Register of Historic Places (2004).
Correct as to the business – separate owners, separate tickets, separate gate – but the caverns' own timeline records the Wildlife Ranch as opened in 1984 by "Raymond Soechting and Trudy Wuest Soechting", so the two share a family, just not a ticket office.
History in brief
- The land has been ranched by the same family since 1884, when Charles Wuest and Emelie Forshage took over neighbouring ranches. In 1937 Hilmar Wuest was fatally injured in a ranch accident, leaving his widow Clara to run it.
- Four students from St. Mary's University in San Antonio and its Speleological Society – Orion Knox Jr., Preston Knodell, Al Brandt and Joe Cantu – asked Clara Wuest for permission to explore a small cave beneath a 60-foot (18 m) limestone bridge on the ranch. On their fourth expedition, on 27 March 1960, the 19-year-old Knox squeezed through a debris-choked crawl nearly 100 feet down and found about two miles of decorated passage.
- Clara Wuest, her second husband Harry Heidemann and her son Reggie borrowed against the ranch to develop the cave. Work began in 1963 (the Texas State Historical Association dates the start of commercial work to March 1962); during excavation of the entrance, projectile points about 10,000 years old were found. The caverns opened on 3 July 1964 and were dedicated a month later by Governor John Connally.
- In 1967 the family drilled six-inch boreholes several hundred feet deep to test whether the cave continued south. The fourth hole hit a void so large that a lowered camera's flash reflected off nothing: the Hidden Cavern, which has no natural entrance. The Texas Historical Commission designated the caverns a State Historical Site on 7 December 1967.
- 1971: the Secretary of the Interior designated Natural Bridge Caverns a National Natural Landmark, 759 acres, noted for its "fried egg" speleothems and helictites. In 2004, after a 2003 University of Texas at San Antonio excavation at the entrance, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- 1984: the first development phase of the Hidden Cavern; the same year Ray and Trudy Soechting opened Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch next door as a separate business. 1998: wild-cave Adventure Tours began, originally by lowering guests 60 feet down a well shaft.
- May 2019: an expedition led by Brad and Travis Wuest climbed the 120-foot Dome Pit and found more than 600 feet of new passage – the largest discovery since 1967. Programmable LED lighting went into the Discovery Cavern in 2019–2020; by February 2024 the known length of the system had reached 4.18 miles. Orion Knox died on 31 December 2022, aged 81.
- 12 May 2023: the Hidden Wonders Tour opened after six years of work, the largest investment in the caverns' history, with the Ballroom concert venue, a bridge over Cathedral Canyon and the B.A.T. conveyor. In March 2024 the Lantern Tour was relaunched in Knox's memory, and on 22 April 2026 aquifer water rose over the cave trail for the first time since 2016.
