When people search for 'Hamburg bunker' they mostly mean a building you do not go inside: the Green Bunker on Feldstraße, a 1942 flak tower whose 560-metre mountain path has led, free and without a ticket, to a roof garden 58 metres up since July 2024. To get underground you have to go elsewhere – through the Old Elbe Tunnel (free, open round the clock) or on a booked tour of a wartime deep shelter that was turned into a Cold War civil-defence bunker. For English speakers the honest picture in October 2026 is thin: Hamburger Unterwelten has an English page for its Central Station shelter but nothing bookable in English, the Steintorwall tour is off sale and the Schellfischtunnel is sold out. What does work in English is free and self-guided, or arranged by email. This page sorts it out, with checked prices in euros and US dollars.

Eleven places in and under Hamburg, compared
Green Bunker St. Pauli – mountain path and roof garden (Grüner Bunker, Flakturm IV)
The main site and what most people mean by 'Hamburg bunker': a 1942 flak tower raised by five storeys between 2019 and 2024, with a 560-metre path climbing the outside to a public roof garden of about 1,400 m² at 58 metres.
335 steps and ramps, planted with about 4,700 trees and shrubs and more than 16,000 perennials. Views of the Elbphilharmonie, St Michael's, the port and into the Millerntor stadium – the north stand roof hides part of the pitch. No dogs, no pushchairs, no food or drink brought from outside; bags are checked. Inside the extension are the Reverb by Hard Rock hotel (134 rooms) and several restaurants.
free, no ticket (10/2026)
Green Bunker – Hilldegarden tour inside the flak tower
The only way into the historic part of the tower. The non-profit Hilldegarden e.V. shows the stairwell, the 'collar' ledge round the building, the former back-up command post on level 0 and historic photographs in its rooms on level 4.
Can be done almost entirely by lift on request, though the command post itself is not wheelchair-accessible; accessible toilet on level 0. Proceeds go to the memorial and neighbourhood work.
adult €20 (about $22.92), child 6–14 €10 (about $11.46), under 6 free (10/2026)
Old Elbe Tunnel (Alter Elbtunnel / St.-Pauli-Elbtunnel)
426.5 metres of tiled tube under the northern Elbe, opened in 1911 for dock workers and a listed monument since 2003. After about 15 years and some €130 million of restoration, both tubes have been open again since 4 May 2026.
The east tube carries cyclists and pedestrians, the restored west tube is a pedestrian visitor and events tunnel. No cars since 2019. Look for the majolica reliefs of sea creatures and the plaque at mid-point giving the roadway as 21 m below mean high water. From the Steinwerder side you get the classic free view back to the Landungsbrücken.
free (10/2026)
Central Station deep shelter (Tiefbunker Steintorwall) – 'Shelter Central Station'

Schellfischtunnel Altona
A railway tunnel opened in 1876 and later extended to about 960 metres, linking Altona station with the Elbe quays – the fresh-fish traffic gave it its nickname. Disused since 1993.
Bring your own working torch (no phone torches), closed shoes, ideally an FFP2 mask; liability waiver at booking; minimum age 12.
€10 (about $11.46), reduced €8 (about $9.17) (10/2026)

€12 (about $13.75), reduced €10 (about $11.46) (10/2026)
Hamm air-raid shelter museum (Bunkermuseum Hamburg-Hamm)
Hamburg's only bunker museum: a four-tube underground shelter of 1940/41, about five metres down, refurnished as it was in the bombing nights.
Four tubes 2 m wide, 17 m long and 2.25 m high, each for about 50 people. Opened as a museum on 1 October 1997. No toilet, not accessible, wear warm clothes.
adult €3 (about $3.44), child up to 12 €1.50 (about $1.72) (10/2026)
Zombeck tower Hasselbrook (Zombeck-Turm)
A rare round bunker with a continuous spiral ramp instead of stairs, opened only on individual dates by the guide company vergangenundvergessen.

Barrier-free and dog-friendly – the opposite of the Green Bunker. Electricity for about 1,500 households and heat for 1,700 homes; about 2,000 m² of solar cladding.
platform and weekend tours free; history walk €8 (about $9.17) (10/2026)
Underground Hamburg tickets and prices
There is nothing to book for the Green Bunker roof garden: it is free and ticketless, and a turnstile at the foot of the mountain path counts people in. For anything that actually goes underground the opposite holds. Hamburger Unterwelten sells its tours only through its own booking portal on Regiondo, on fixed dates released in batches; its FAQ says booking is compulsory for every tour. unter hamburg e.V. takes registrations by email only (info@unter-hamburg.de; English requests to Englishguides@unter-hamburg.de). The Hilldegarden tour is sold through the association's ticket shop and needs at least eight people to run.

When everything is sold out
Yes, and badly. When checked on 8 October 2026 the Hamburger Unterwelten portal listed the Schellfischtunnel as sold out, and the Central Station deep shelter tour page read 'TICKETS AUSVERKAUFT' with the note that the offer is no longer available; the English 'Shelter Central Station' tour had its own information page but no bookable product. Only a German city walk, a day seminar and vouchers were on sale. The association asks people to check back rather than email, because new dates are released continually.
Bookable tours of Hamburg's bunkers
For the Green Bunker you pay for a guide, not for access: the mountain path and roof garden are free, and the walks sold on booking sites, around €25 (about $28.65), follow that same free route outside the building. The only tour into the historic tower is Hilldegarden e.V.'s, €20 (about $22.92), in German and sold only in the association's own shop. The deep shelters are just as closed to resellers: Hamburger Unterwelten sells its €12 (about $13.75) Central Station tour solely through its own portal. A reseller is worth it where it adds something – a guide in English, free cancellation, or a walk that ties several sites together. Check the description for the language and whether you actually go underground.

Underground Hamburg opening hours and best time
Every site keeps its own hours. Green Bunker mountain path and roof garden: daily 09:00–21:00 from May to September and 09:00–17:00 from October to April according to Hamburg's culture listing; the building's own website now gives 09:00–23:00 in summer (see 'unsicher'); holidays may differ. Old Elbe Tunnel: open to pedestrians and cyclists 24 hours a day, closed only on New Year's Eve from 21:00 to 04:00; stairs and the glass passenger lifts run round the clock, the big historic cage lifts Monday–Friday 05:30–20:00 and at weekends and on public holidays 10:00–18:00. Hamburger Unterwelten and unter hamburg: no opening hours, only individual tour dates. Hamm air-raid shelter museum: Thursdays only, 10:00–12:00 and 15:00–18:00, last entry 17:15, closed on public holidays. Energy Bunker Wilhelmsburg: Friday 12:00–17:00, Saturday and Sunday 11:00–18:00. Hilldegarden public tour inside the Green Bunker: first Sunday of the month, 11:00–12:30.
When it is quietest
Roof garden: a weekday just after the 09:00 opening, or the last hour or two before closing. On warm weekends there are queues at the turnstile, because only 900 people may be on the roof at once and about 4,000 a day climb it. From October to April the path closes at 17:00, which is the only season when you can watch the sunset from the top. Underground the weather does not matter, the booking calendar does: Hamburger Unterwelten dates go weeks ahead. Walk the Old Elbe Tunnel in the evening if you want the tiles to yourself – by day it is a cycle route.
Who it suits
With children
Very mixed. The Green Bunker roof garden is fine for children, but it means 335 steps and ramps and pushchairs are not allowed. The Old Elbe Tunnel is the easiest outing of all: free, level, with lifts. The Hamm museum is small and suits primary-school children. The Hamburger Unterwelten shelters and the Schellfischtunnel have a minimum age of 12 because of their subject.
Minimum age
Hamburger Unterwelten: 12 for the deep shelters and the tunnel, under-18s only with a parent or guardian; 7 for its city walks. No minimum age for the Green Bunker, Old Elbe Tunnel, Hamm museum or Energy Bunker.
Wheelchair
The weak spot. The Green Bunker roof garden is not routinely accessible: the mountain path has steps, and the lifts are not open to the public. The operator's FAQ points visitors who cannot climb to a lift on the left side of the bunker that goes to level 0; Hilldegarden e.V. says it has campaigned for years against arbitrary rules and being asked about medical conditions by security staff, but has no say over access. The Old Elbe Tunnel is step-free via the glass lifts, which run 24 hours. The Energy Bunker says it is barrier-free. Not accessible: every Hamburger Unterwelten site and the Hamm museum.
Pushchair
Not allowed on the Green Bunker mountain path or roof garden. No problem in the Old Elbe Tunnel thanks to the lifts. Effectively impossible on the underground tours.
Dogs
Green Bunker: no dogs on the mountain path or the roof garden. Hamburger Unterwelten: no pets. Energy Bunker and its café: dogs explicitly welcome.
Claustrophobia
The Green Bunker is an outdoor climb. The Hamburger Unterwelten shelters are another matter: the association flags claustrophobia, ceilings are about 2.60 m (8 ft 6 in) and the Schellfischtunnel walk covers 2 km of track ballast under emergency lighting. unter hamburg asks for participants who are emotionally robust and not claustrophobic. The Old Elbe Tunnel is bright, wide and busy.
What to wear
Underground it is about 12 °C (54 °F) all year – take a jacket in August. Hamburger Unterwelten requires sturdy closed shoes; for the Schellfischtunnel also a working torch of your own (a phone torch is explicitly not enough) and an FFP2 mask is recommended because of pigeons at the entrance and cement dust. On the mountain path a windproof layer matters more than a jumper.
Photography
Free on the Green Bunker. Hamburger Unterwelten allows private photos on most tours but no video or tripods; any publication needs written permission. At the Green Bunker you cannot take your own food or drink up, and bags are checked.
Underground Hamburg: getting there
By public transport
From Hamburg Airport take the S1 into the city (change to the U3 for Feldstraße, or ride on to Hauptbahnhof and Landungsbrücken). Green Bunker: U3 Feldstraße, 150 m; also buses to Feldstraße (Heiligengeistfeld). Old Elbe Tunnel: S1/S3 or U3 Landungsbrücken, north entrance in the domed building. Steintorwall shelter: Hauptbahnhof, forecourt on the Steintorwall/Spitalerstraße side. Hachmannplatz shelter: meet outside the Schauspielhaus by the U-Bahn exit on Kirchenallee. Berliner Tor bunker: U/S Berliner Tor, green space on Borgfelder Straße. Schellfischtunnel: S-Bahn Altona, Präsident-Krahn-Straße by the car-train check-in. Harburg: S-Bahn Harburg Rathaus, Lüneburger Straße 48. Hamm museum: U2 or bus 116 to Rauhes Haus. Energy Bunker: Neuhöfer Straße 7, Wilhelmsburg. Zombeck tower: Hasselbrookstraße 174.
By car
Do not drive. Parking around the Green Bunker is hopeless, especially on FC St. Pauli match days and during the Hamburger DOM fair on the Heiligengeistfeld; Hamburg's culture listing names three disabled bays 300–450 m away on Glashüttenstraße and Karolinenstraße. Hamburger Unterwelten says there is hardly any parking at any of its sites and recommends public transport.
From the nearest city
Everything is inside the city and 10–35 minutes from Hauptbahnhof by HVV public transport. Furthest out: the Energy Bunker in Wilhelmsburg and the Harburg shelter.
Tips for your visit
- Decide first whether you want a view or the underground. The Green Bunker is a view and costs nothing; underground means the Old Elbe Tunnel (free), the Hamm museum (€3, Thursdays) or a booked tour.
- If you need English, email early: Englishguides@unter-hamburg.de for the Hachmannplatz and Berliner Tor shelters, or the Hamm museum for a booked English tour. Do not count on finding an English date in the Hamburger Unterwelten portal.
- Check the Hamburger Unterwelten portal several weeks before your trip and again a few days later – there are no waiting lists, but new dates appear regularly.
- Go up the Green Bunker just after 09:00 on a weekday. On warm weekend afternoons you queue at the turnstile.
- Bags are checked at the Green Bunker and you cannot take your own food or drink up. Eat before or in the building.
- If you cannot manage 335 steps, go to the Energy Bunker in Wilhelmsburg instead: step-free platform, free weekend tours, dogs welcome.
- Bring a proper torch for the Schellfischtunnel. Phone torches are not accepted.
- Walk the Old Elbe Tunnel in the evening, when the cyclists have gone and the tiles are yours.
- Paid 'St. Pauli Bunker' tours on booking sites take you along the same free path to the roof; you pay for the guide, not for access.
Underground Hamburg: what the internet gets wrong
The mountain path and roof garden opened on 5 July 2024, as the project's site bunker-stpauli.de and Wikipedia both state.
Hilldegarden e.V., which has worked through the building records, dates construction from April 1942 into summer 1943, with interior work still unfinished in May 1943.
they are the same route – the 335 steps and ramps are on the 560-metre path. There is no public lift alternative; the lift is not open to the public (t-online).
the path opens at 09:00. Hamburg's culture listing gives 09:00–21:00 from May to September and 09:00–17:00 from October to April; the operator's own site gives 09:00 opening too.
The lifts are not open to the public. The operator's FAQ directs only people who physically cannot climb to a lift that goes to level 0, and Hilldegarden e.V. says the roof garden is not fundamentally barrier-free.
The tower was originally 38 metres tall (German Wikipedia), and Hilldegarden e.V. counts up to 2,400 forced labourers.
Germany had regular television from 22 March 1935 (Fernsehsender Paul Nipkow). What went out from the bunker in 1950 were NWDR's post-war West German test broadcasts.
German Wikipedia gives 3.5 m walls and a 5 m roof; the project site says up to 3.8 m.
The tunnel has been closed to motor vehicles since 2019, as the Hamburg Port Authority states.
Out of date since 4 May 2026, when the restored west tube reopened; both tubes are now open (Hamburg Port Authority).
24 m is the depth of the shafts. The ceramic plaque at mid-tunnel puts the roadway at 21 m below mean high water (German Wikipedia).
It now also opens on Fridays, the free tours run at 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00 (vju café / Energiebunker site), and 30 m is about 98 ft.
Hamburger Unterwelten gives 2,460 places for the wartime shelter; the 2,702 belong to the Cold War conversion completed in 1969.
History in brief
- Hitler ordered flak towers on 9 September 1940, first for Berlin, later also for Vienna and Hamburg; Hamburg got two of three planned gun towers, Flakturm IV on the Heiligengeistfeld and Flakturm VI in Wilhelmsburg.
- According to the research of Hilldegarden e.V., Flakturm IV was built between April 1942 and summer 1943 by up to 2,400 forced labourers, who were themselves refused shelter during air raids. It was designed for 18,000 people; in the raids of summer 1943 up to 25,000 crowded in.
- Underground Hamburg is older than the war: the Schellfischtunnel in Altona opened in 1876, and the St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel on 7 September 1911, built under compressed air because ferries could no longer carry the shipyard workers.
- Deep shelters such as Steintorwall (1941–1943), Hachmannplatz (1941) and Berliner Tor followed during the war; the Hamm tube shelter dates from 1940/41.
- In 1949 the broadcaster NWDR moved into the Feldstraße bunker, and in 1950 post-war West German television test broadcasts went out from there.
- In the Cold War, Hamburg refitted wartime shelters for civil defence: Steintorwall was handed over at the end of 1969 for 2,702 people, and stations such as Harburg-Rathaus were built as multi-purpose shelters.
- From 2019 the Feldstraße bunker was raised by five storeys; the mountain path and roof garden opened on 5 July 2024, and some 2.3 million people visited in the first year.
- On 4 May 2026 the restored west tube of the Old Elbe Tunnel reopened, after about 15 years of work on both tubes.
Underground Hamburg: frequently asked questions
How much does the Hamburg bunker (Green Bunker) cost?
Nothing. The mountain path and roof garden are free and need no ticket. You only pay for extras: the Hilldegarden tour inside for €20 (about $22.92), a guided walk round the outside from about €25, or food in the building.
What are the Green Bunker's opening hours?
Hamburg's culture listing gives 09:00–21:00 from May to September and 09:00–17:00 from October to April, with variations on public holidays; the building's own site lists up to 23:00 in summer. The opening time of 09:00 is the same in every source. Do not arrive right before closing.
Can you go inside the Hamburg bunker?
Only with Hilldegarden e.V., the association that guides inside the historic flak tower and shows the former back-up command post. Its public tour runs on the first Sunday of the month, 11:00–12:30, in German, for €20 (about $22.92), children 6–14 €10, minimum eight people. Every other tour goes round the outside.
Are there bunker tours in English in Hamburg?
Few. Hamburger Unterwelten has an English page for its Central Station shelter but had no English date on sale on 8 October 2026. unter hamburg e.V. arranges English tours of its deep shelters on request by email, the Hamm museum does English tours by appointment, and Globetrotter Werksführung runs private English groups in the Berliner Tordamm bunker for €160 (about $183.36). The free sites need no language at all.
How many steps are there up the Green Bunker?
335 steps and ramps along a 560-metre (1,837 ft) path, rising to 58 metres. Allow 60–90 minutes for up, the garden and down.
Is the Green Bunker wheelchair accessible?
Not routinely. The lifts are not open to the public; the operator sends people who cannot climb to a lift to level 0, and access beyond that depends on security staff. Pushchairs and dogs are banned. For a step-free bunker view go to the Energy Bunker in Wilhelmsburg.
Where can you actually go underground in Hamburg?
In the Old Elbe Tunnel (free, 24 hours), the Hamm air-raid shelter museum (Thursdays, €3) and, with a booked tour, the deep shelters at Steintorwall, Hachmannplatz and Berliner Tor, the Schellfischtunnel and the Harburg-Rathaus shelter. The Green Bunker and the Energy Bunker are above-ground towers.
Is the Old Elbe Tunnel free and open?
Yes, free for pedestrians and cyclists and open 24 hours except New Year's Eve, 21:00–04:00. Since 4 May 2026 both tubes are open again after restoration. Cars have been banned since 2019.
How do I get tickets for Hamburger Unterwelten?
Only through the association's online booking portal; there is no box office and no waiting list. Steintorwall and Harburg cost €12 (about $13.75), the Schellfischtunnel €10 (about $11.46). When checked on 8 October 2026 nothing underground was on sale, so look again regularly.
How cold is it in the Hamburg bunkers?
About 12 °C (54 °F) all year in the Hamburger Unterwelten sites, about 14 °C in the Berliner Tordamm bunker. Take a jacket even in summer, and sturdy shoes.
Are Hamburg bunker tours suitable for children?
The deep shelter and tunnel tours of Hamburger Unterwelten have a minimum age of 12. The Old Elbe Tunnel, the Hamm museum and the Energy Bunker work well with children; the Green Bunker is fine without a pushchair.
Is the club Uebel & Gefährlich the bunker people talk about?
It is a tenant in the same building and opens only for concerts and club nights. The free roof garden is what most visitors mean; the club cannot be toured.
Is the Green Bunker worth it?
As a viewpoint, yes: one of the best free views of Hamburg. As a bunker visit, no – you walk round the outside and the history is on information boards in German. For the inside, take the Hilldegarden tour or a deep shelter tour.
How do I get to the Green Bunker from the airport?
Take the S1 from Hamburg Airport and change to the U3 for Feldstraße; the entrance is about 150 metres from the station. From Hauptbahnhof the U3 takes a few minutes.
Can I take food or a bottle up the Green Bunker?
No food or drink from outside is allowed on the roof garden, and bags are checked at the entrance. There are cafés and restaurants in the building.
