A look inside
Double pages like a printed guidebook, with links in the PDF: every place and every QR code leads to its page on this site.
What's inside
- Eleven chapters from the Harz and Kyffhäuser to Berlin, Hamburg and the North, each with a regional map.
- A double page for the major places, one page for the rest: key figures, “Before you go”, admission with date checked and a dollar guide, hours, getting there.
- “What others get wrong”: 34 places with sourced corrections to mistakes on travel portals and in guidebooks.
- Tour languages: where English tours, audio guides or leaflets exist, the entry says so – most German tours are in German only.
- Bats: why caves close in winter, what you can do, and which places are hibernation sites.
- Places by occasion (mine train and boat, wheelchair, pushchair, dog), an Underground Pass for all 100 places and an index.

Berchtesgaden Salt Mine
Two slides, a raft at 130 m, 12 °C, and one bus from Salzburg.
Underground Berlin
Eight tours in English, and a car park where the bunker was.
Underground Hamburg
A free roof garden on a flak tower, and very few tours in English.
Frequent questions
Is the PDF really free?
Yes. Download it without signing up, print it and share it unchanged.
Are the tours in English?
Most guided tours in Germany are in German. Many sites offer English audio guides, leaflets or tours on request; the book says so wherever the operator confirms it.
How up to date is it?
Prices and opening hours were checked with the operators in October 2026. Because they change, every place in the PDF links to its page on this site.
Which places are included?
Show caves such as the Atta, Dechen and Barbarossa caves, show mines such as Rammelsberg, Merkers and Berchtesgaden, Cold War bunkers in Ahrweiler and Cochem – 100 places in all, plus more than 100 in short lists.
Can I read it on my phone?
Yes. It is A5, 18 MB, and every link is clickable.
Is there a German edition?
Yes, as “Unterwelt Deutschland” on unterwelt-atlas.de.
