  3. Erlebnis Bergwerk Merkers

Show mine Merkers · Thuringian Forest · Thuringia

Merkers offers the longest mine tour available to tourists in Germany: a 90-second cable ride in a mine cage down to a depth of 500 metres, followed by a round trip of around 21 kilometres in open crew wagons through the disused potash mine. Stops along the route include the ‘Gold Room’, where the US Army discovered the Reichsbank’s gold reserves on 8 April 1945, an underground museum covering 1,500 square metres, the 250-metre-long ‘Großbunker’ housing the world’s largest bucket-wheel excavator ever used underground, and finally the Crystal Grotto at a depth of 800 metres.

  10. Barbarossahöhle

Cave Kyffhäuserland · Kyffhäuser · Thuringia

According to the operator and Wikipedia, the Barbarossa Cave near Rottleben is one of only two anhydrite show caves in the world – the other being the Kungur Ice Cave in the Urals. Instead of stalactites, ‘gypsum flaps’ up to a metre long hang from the ceiling like hides hung out to dry; between them lie crystal-clear lakes in which the entire vault is reflected.

How this directory is made

It only lists places you can actually visit in 2026: show caves with guided tours, show mines, walk-in tunnels and bunkers. Museums without a way underground are left out, and so are sites that have closed. Prices, opening hours and temperatures come from the operators, and every entry names its source. If something could not be confirmed, it is missing rather than guessed. Place names stay in German, as they appear on signs and tickets.

What to expect underground

Underground it is the same temperature all year – between 3 and 20 °C at the places listed. Bring a jacket even in high summer, and sturdy shoes: paths are often wet and slippery. Most guided tours in Germany are in German only; many sites offer English leaflets or audio guides, so ask at the ticket desk. With a pushchair or wheelchair, use the filters above – far from every site is accessible.
