  1. Kluterthöhle

    Cave Ennepetal · Bergisches Land · North Rhine-Westphalia

    A fossilised coral reef with over 300 passages, designated a National Natural Monument since 2019; since July 2025, it has been connected to the Bismarck Cave and, at around 8.7 kilometres, is the longest cave in North Rhine-Westphalia. No stalactite displays here, but fossils and a labyrinth – alongside a recognised therapeutic tunnel. In addition to the standard tour, there are crawling and dark tours.

  2. Wiehler Tropfsteinhöhle

    Show cave Wiehl · Bergisches Land · North Rhine-Westphalia

    Discovered in 1860, this 1,500-metre network of passages lies in the Bergisches Land. A flight of 26 steps leads down some seven metres into the entrance hall; the colours of the sinter range from white to bright red. Wedding ceremonies are held at a depth of 30 metres.

  3. Zeittunnel Wülfrath

    Tunnel Wülfrath · Bergisches Land · North Rhine-Westphalia

    A 160-metre-long mining tunnel in the Bochum Fault, wide enough for lorries, now serves as an exhibition space showcasing 400 million years of Earth’s history. Unlike most underground sites, you can walk through it here without a guided tour.

  4. Aggertalhöhle

    Cave Engelskirchen-Ründeroth · Bergisches Land · North Rhine-Westphalia

    At 6 to 8 degrees, it is the coldest of the Bergisch show caves – a warm jacket is essential. Guided tours are held in small groups of no more than 20 people; on Sundays, the tour ends with a musical performance in the cave chamber.

  5. Besucherbergwerk Grube Silberhardt

    Show mine Windeck-Öttershagen · Bergisches Land · North Rhine-Westphalia

    A mine that an association has re-excavated since 1997, putting in over 15,000 hours of voluntary work. The Upper New Adit stretches for around 250 metres; it features a mineral collection in the visitor centre and a free 1.7-kilometre mining trail.

    Summer season from 1 April: public guided tours from Tuesday to Thursday at 11.30 am; on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, tours run hourly from 1 pm (last tour at 4 pm). How this directory is made

It only lists places you can actually visit in 2026: show caves with guided tours, show mines, walk-in tunnels and bunkers. Museums without a way underground are left out, and so are sites that have closed. Prices, opening hours and temperatures come from the operators, and every entry names its source. If something could not be confirmed, it is missing rather than guessed. Place names stay in German, as they appear on signs and tickets.

What to expect underground

Underground it is the same temperature all year – between 3 and 20 °C at the places listed. Bring a jacket even in high summer, and sturdy shoes: paths are often wet and slippery. Most guided tours in Germany are in German only; many sites offer English leaflets or audio guides, so ask at the ticket desk. With a pushchair or wheelchair, use the filters above – far from every site is accessible.
