    Cave Mechernich-Eiserfey · Eifel · North Rhine-Westphalia

    One of the few caves in North Rhine-Westphalia that can be entered without a guided tour and without paying an entrance fee: two large chambers in the Kartstein tufa, which have been used since the Palaeolithic period. Access is restricted to before dusk due to the bats.

  2. Römerbergwerk Meurin

    An ancient tuff quarry dating from the time of Constantine, now completely covered: you walk through original Roman tunnels and can see the marks left by quarrying on the walls. There is also a workshop area featuring replicas of Roman machinery.

  3. Besucherbergwerk Grube Bendisberg

    Show mine Langenfeld (Eifel) · Eifel · Rhineland-Palatinate

    Lead and zinc ore from the Siegen strata; according to the association, this is the only visitor mine in the Eifel where one can see the ore veins dating from the time of the formation of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Three levels, one above the other, are connected by a spiral staircase and a ladder.

  4. Lava-Dome & Lavakeller Mendig

    Beneath Mendig, at a depth of 30 metres, lies a vast network of basalt cellars, created during the quarrying of millstones. The constant coolness meant that, in the 19th century, they were used as storage cellars by the local breweries.

  5. Besucherbergwerk Mühlenberger Stollen

    Tunnel Bleialf · Eifel · Rhineland-Palatinate

    The only visitor mine for galena in the Trier administrative district, developed between 1839 and 1852 as part of the ‘Neue Hoffnung’ mine. At times, up to a thousand people worked underground in Bleialf; above ground, a mining trail complements the guided tour.

  6. Besucherbergwerk Grube Wohlfahrt

    Show mine Hellenthal-Rescheid · Eifel · North Rhine-Westphalia

    Graphite mining in the Northern Eifel, where tunnelling began in the late Middle Ages. The Rescheid Local History Society runs daily tours – lasting an hour and a half deep into the mountain, including a visit to the museum in the mine house – with no booking required.

  7. Deutsches Schieferbergwerk Mayen

    Tunnel Mayen · Eifel · Rhineland-Palatinate

    A 340-metre-long labyrinth of tunnels 16 metres beneath Genovevaburg Castle, excavated in late 1944 as an air-raid shelter for around 3,000 people. Today, it houses an exhibition on Moselle slate, featuring mine trolleys, wire saws and a simulated trolley ride.

  8. Besucherbergwerk Grube Günnersdorf

    Show mine Mechernich · Eifel · North Rhine-Westphalia

    Lead-bearing sandstone was already being mined at the Mechernich Bleiberg in Roman times; in the 19th century, the mining district was one of the largest in Europe. The Günnersdorf shaft was not established until 1940 and tapped into the remaining ore deposits at greater depths.

  9. Dokumentationsstätte Ausweichsitz NRW

    In the event of an emergency, the state government would have directed civil defence operations from here. The facility, which dates from the 1960s, is remarkably well preserved in its original state, and the equipment is still operational. It is located underground and is accessed via a flight of stairs.

  10. Römisches Kupferbergwerk Pützlöcher

    Show mine Newel-Butzweiler · Eifel · Rhineland-Palatinate

    Malachite and azurite were mined here in the mid-2nd century by the Romans – together with the Emilianus adit, one of the oldest documented underground mines in Germany. Later, the ashlars for Trier’s Porta Nigra were quarried from this site.

How this directory is made

It only lists places you can actually visit in 2026: show caves with guided tours, show mines, walk-in tunnels and bunkers. Museums without a way underground are left out, and so are sites that have closed. Prices, opening hours and temperatures come from the operators, and every entry names its source. If something could not be confirmed, it is missing rather than guessed. Place names stay in German, as they appear on signs and tickets.

What to expect underground

Underground it is the same temperature all year – between 3 and 20 °C at the places listed. Bring a jacket even in high summer, and sturdy shoes: paths are often wet and slippery. Most guided tours in Germany are in German only; many sites offer English leaflets or audio guides, so ask at the ticket desk. With a pushchair or wheelchair, use the filters above – far from every site is accessible.
