Since 1993, the mine has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records as ‘the most colourful show caves in the world’.

Today, one section of it features scenes from fairy tales.

How this directory is made

It only lists places you can actually visit in 2026: show caves with guided tours, show mines, walk-in tunnels and bunkers. Museums without a way underground are left out, and so are sites that have closed. Prices, opening hours and temperatures come from the operators, and every entry names its source. If something could not be confirmed, it is missing rather than guessed. Place names stay in German, as they appear on signs and tickets.

What to expect underground

Underground it is the same temperature all year – between 3 and 20 °C at the places listed. Bring a jacket even in high summer, and sturdy shoes: paths are often wet and slippery. Most guided tours in Germany are in German only; many sites offer English leaflets or audio guides, so ask at the ticket desk. With a pushchair or wheelchair, use the filters above – far from every site is accessible.
