Schauhöhle Herbstlabyrinth
Show cave Breitscheid · Westerwald · Hesse
Discovered as recently as 1993, it is one of Germany’s newest show caves. At its heart lies the Knöpfchenhalle: around 120 metres long, 22 metres wide and 32 metres high, with walkways made of GRP rather than concrete.

Besucherbergwerk Grube Bindweide

The original mine railway travels some 800 metres into the depths of the Bindweider Tunnel – the very same route that the miners used to take to get to their shifts. The main mineral mined here was iron pyrite.

Alvenslebenstollen

The deep water-drainage adit at the Louise iron ore mine, running in a dead straight line from the Wied Valley towards Lahr Castle. The walls still bear the marks of survey pegs, measurement markers and hand-drilled holes from black powder blasting.

Dachschiefergrube Assberg

A medieval slate quarry, first mentioned in a document in 1548, whose slate was used to roof Hachenburg Castle and Marienstatt Abbey. The underground chamber is open round the clock – as you descend the 30 steps, the lights come on automatically.

How this directory is made
It only lists places you can actually visit in 2026: show caves with guided tours, show mines, walk-in tunnels and bunkers. Museums without a way underground are left out, and so are sites that have closed. Prices, opening hours and temperatures come from the operators, and every entry names its source. If something could not be confirmed, it is missing rather than guessed. Place names stay in German, as they appear on signs and tickets.
What to expect underground
Underground it is the same temperature all year – between 3 and 20 °C at the places listed. Bring a jacket even in high summer, and sturdy shoes: paths are often wet and slippery. Most guided tours in Germany are in German only; many sites offer English leaflets or audio guides, so ask at the ticket desk. With a pushchair or wheelchair, use the filters above – far from every site is accessible.
