  1. Kaiserthermen Trier – Bedienungsgänge

    Catacomb Trier · Moselle · Rhineland-Palatinate

    The thermal baths were never completed, but their basement is exceptionally well preserved: a network of service corridors and drainage channels beneath the bathing complex that visitors can walk through. A World Heritage Site since 1986.

  2. Bundesbank-Bunker Cochem

    Bunker Cochem · Moselle · Rhineland-Palatinate

    Disguised as two residential buildings, the Bundesbank stored its contingency currency here in the event of a nuclear war: 300 metres of corridors, 1,500 square metres of floor space, vaults and a kitchen capable of catering for 175 people.

  3. Amphitheater Trier – Arenakeller

    Catacomb Trier · Moselle · Rhineland-Palatinate

    Beneath the arena lies a basement containing the remains of stage machinery and cages for humans and animals; it was uncovered around 1908. During the interactive tour, a gladiator leads the way through the cellars and tunnels.

  4. Besucherbergwerk Fell

    Show mine Fell · Moselle · Rhineland-Palatinate

    Two slate quarries, one above the other, connected by a 100-metre-long stairwell. Roofing slate was quarried here right up until the 20th century; at the top, the quarry trail passes ten further quarries.

  5. Felsenkeller Weinkeller Schwaab

    Rock cellar Koblenz-Güls · Moselle · Rhineland-Palatinate

    A mountain tunnel beneath the steep slope of the Marienberg in Koblenz, originally built as a mine and now serving as a barrel and stainless-steel cellar for a winery. The tasting takes place down in the cellar, where the temperature remains consistently cool.

  6. Weinkeller der Vereinigten Hospitien

    Rock cellar Trier · Moselle · Rhineland-Palatinate

    Germany’s oldest wine cellar, built within Roman storage halls dating from around 330 AD; in the late 7th century, the Merovingians constructed a ribbed vault within the ancient masonry. Wine has been matured here continuously since Napoleon established the foundation.

How this directory is made

It only lists places you can actually visit in 2026: show caves with guided tours, show mines, walk-in tunnels and bunkers. Museums without a way underground are left out, and so are sites that have closed. Prices, opening hours and temperatures come from the operators, and every entry names its source. If something could not be confirmed, it is missing rather than guessed. Place names stay in German, as they appear on signs and tickets.

What to expect underground

Underground it is the same temperature all year – between 3 and 20 °C at the places listed. Bring a jacket even in high summer, and sturdy shoes: paths are often wet and slippery. Most guided tours in Germany are in German only; many sites offer English leaflets or audio guides, so ask at the ticket desk. With a pushchair or wheelchair, use the filters above – far from every site is accessible.
